59 new reasons to head to South Beach (2011)

Stake out your tent

Two new camping loops at South Beach State Park are now open to first-come, first-served tent campers. The sites can hold a variety of tent sizes (up to 12 feet in the largest sites), and have gravel back-in driveways of 38-40 feet. The area also has a new restroom/shower building.

Small RVs are allowed as long as they fit entirely on the driveway. But don’t look for hookups. The loops are power-free zones, including generators. Water spigots and waste water disposal units are spaced throughout each loop.

The sites are open now through October 2011 as first-come, first-served camping, then close for the winter (the rest of the park’s campsites are open year-round, though). Starting in 2012, the sites will be first-come, first-served every March-June, then become reservable for July-September, and switch back to first-come, first-served every October before closing again for winter.

You can make reservations for July 2012 stays as early as October 2011. Check the South Beach web page for rate information.
